Cape Royal is the southernmost viewpoint reachable by vehicle on the Grand Canyon North Rim and one of the park's most spectacular overlooks. A short, paved trail leads to expansive canyon views, Angels Window, and one of the best sunset locations in Grand Canyon National Park.

The North Rim operates seasonally, and weather, road maintenance, wildfires or other conditions can temporarily affect roads, trails and visitor services.
Before your trip, check the National Park Service for current road conditions, facility availability and any temporary closures. Services on the North Rim are more limited than on the South Rim, so arrive with plenty of drinking water and fuel.

Cape Royal is famous for its nearly 270-degree panorama, views of the Colorado River, Angels Window, and spectacular sunsets. Unlike Point Imperial, which emphasizes elevation and eastern vistas, Cape Royal offers a broad perspective across the central canyon with one of the easiest walks on the North Rim.
Angels Window
About halfway along the paved Cape Royal Trail, a short spur leads to Angels Window, a natural arch carved through the Kaibab Limestone. Visitors can safely walk across the top of the formation on a protected overlook while enjoying views deep into the canyon.
Sunset
Cape Royal is widely considered the premier sunset viewpoint on the North Rim. Its westward exposure allows warm evening light to sweep across multiple layers of canyon walls before fading into colorful twilight.
Planning Your Visit
Seasonal Access
Cape Royal is accessible during the North Rim visitor season, which typically runs from mid-May until mid-October. Outside the operating season, snowfall closes Arizona State Route 67 and North Rim roads to vehicle traffic.
Roads may also close temporarily because of winter storms, wildfire activity, maintenance projects or other safety concerns. Check current conditions before traveling.
Water and Visitor Services
Cape Royal has vault toilets and picnic tables but does not provide drinking water, food service or fuel.
Bring plenty of water, snacks and supplies before beginning the scenic drive.
Weather and Safety
