Mohave Point Grand Canyon Visitor Guide

Mohave Point is one of the best South Rim viewpoints for seeing the Colorado River. Located along Hermit Road, the overlook provides a long western view of the river corridor and clear sightlines toward several major rapids far below.

The viewpoint is also an excellent alternative to nearby Hopi Point for sunset. Mohave Point usually feels less congested, and both outbound and inbound Hermits Rest Route buses stop here. That makes returning to Grand Canyon Village easier during normal shuttle hours.

Most visitors reach Mohave Point using the free Hermits Rest Route shuttle from March through November. It can also be reached by walking or bicycling along Hermit Road and the Canyon Rim Trail.

Colorado River Views and Sunset

The View from Mohave Point

Mohave Point looks west along an extended section of the Colorado River corridor. The river lies roughly one vertical mile below the rim and appears between dark inner-canyon walls, side canyons and layered formations.

The National Park Service identifies Salt Creek, Granite and Hermit rapids among the river features visible from the overlook. Hermit Rapid is especially prominent and may appear as a bright patch of whitewater when sunlight reaches the river.

The panorama also includes formations known as The Alligator, Tower of Set, Horus Temple, Osiris Temple, Tower of Ra and Isis Temple. Atmospheric haze and changing light can make some landmarks easier to identify than others.

Binoculars or a telephoto lens are useful for locating the river and individual rapids. The canyon’s immense scale can make even powerful whitewater features appear surprisingly small from the rim.

Why Mohave Point Is Good for Sunset

Mohave Point offers a broad western view, making it one of the strongest sunset locations along Hermit Road. Evening light can illuminate the canyon walls, river corridor and distant formations before the sun reaches the horizon.

It is generally less congested than Hopi Point, although it can still become busy during summer, weekends and holiday periods.

Arrive 45 to 60 minutes before sunset. The canyon often displays its best contrast and color before the sun disappears, and twilight may continue producing softer color afterward.

Bring a warm layer and a headlamp. Temperatures can fall quickly after direct sunlight leaves the rim.

Is Mohave Point Worth Visiting?

Yes. Mohave Point is one of the most rewarding stops on Hermit Road, particularly for visitors who want to see the Colorado River without hiking below the rim.

It is especially worthwhile for:

  • Visitors interested in Colorado River views
  • Travelers looking for a less crowded sunset alternative
  • Photographers using wide and telephoto lenses
  • Visitors walking between Hopi Point and Mohave Point
  • Travelers who want an easy inbound shuttle connection

Photography Tips

  • Use a telephoto lens or binoculars to locate Hermit Rapid and other river features.
  • Late morning light may illuminate portions of the Colorado River below.
  • Evening light works well for the western panorama and layered canyon walls.
  • Include trees or rim rock in the foreground to communicate scale.
  • Keep tripods clear of paths, shuttle areas and accessible viewing space.
  • Carry a headlamp when photographing sunset.
  • Never cross barriers or move backward toward an exposed edge while composing a photograph.

Shuttle, Walking and Seasonal Access

How to Reach Mohave Point

From March through November, most visitors reach Mohave Point using the free Hermits Rest Route shuttle, identified by red route signs.

The route begins at the Village Route Transfer Station near the western end of Grand Canyon Village. Buses travel west along Hermit Road and stop at a series of scenic overlooks before reaching Hermits Rest.

Mohave Point is served in both directions. Visitors can board an outbound bus toward Hermits Rest or an inbound bus returning directly toward Grand Canyon Village.

This two-way service is one of Mohave Point’s practical advantages over Hopi Point, where ordinary daytime eastbound buses do not stop.

2026 Summer Shuttle Schedule

For the summer schedule from May 23 through September 11, 2026, the Hermits Rest Route begins at 8 a.m. and continues until approximately one hour after sunset.

During this period, buses are scheduled approximately:

  • Every 15 minutes from 8 a.m. to 10:30 a.m.
  • Every eight minutes from 10:30 a.m. until one hour after sunset

The complete shuttle loop takes approximately 80 minutes without getting off. Seasonal schedules change, so check the current NPS timetable before planning a sunrise, sunset or time-sensitive connection.

Walking from Hopi Point

Mohave Point is approximately 0.8 mile west of Hopi Point along an unpaved section of the Canyon Rim Trail.

The walk provides changing views of the Colorado River and canyon formations. It is a useful way to experience more of Hermit Road without committing to a long hike.

The trail can be uneven, dusty, muddy, snowy or icy depending on conditions. Carry water, wear stable footwear and avoid walking an unfamiliar rim section after dark without a headlamp.

One practical itinerary is to ride the shuttle to Hopi Point, use the restroom there, walk west to Mohave Point and take an inbound bus back toward Grand Canyon Village.

Plan your walk on the Grand Canyon Rim Trail »

Walking Toward The Abyss

The Canyon Rim Trail continues west from Mohave Point toward The Abyss and Monument Creek Vista.

This section provides additional rim scenery but requires more time, water and transportation planning than the short walk from Hopi Point.

The terrain is exposed to sun, wind and thunderstorms. Confirm the distance, current trail conditions and remaining shuttle service before continuing west.

Winter Vehicle Access

Hermit Road is generally closed to private vehicles during the shuttle season and normally opens to private traffic during December, January and February.

Winter access remains subject to vehicle-length limits, snow, ice, maintenance and temporary road closures. Check current park conditions before driving.

Parking at the individual overlooks is limited. Use designated spaces and do not block the shuttle loop, roadway or emergency access.

Can You Visit Mohave Point for Sunrise?

Mohave Point can provide attractive sunrise views, but reaching it before dawn is more complicated during the shuttle season because regular Red Route service may begin after sunrise.

During months when Hermit Road is closed to private vehicles, early access may require walking, bicycling or using an authorized commercial service.

During winter vehicle-access months, sunrise access may be possible by car when Hermit Road is open and safe to travel.

Visitor Planning and Nearby Viewpoints

Restrooms, Food and Water

Mohave Point does not have restrooms, drinking water or food service.

The nearest public restroom along Hermit Road is at Hopi Point, approximately 0.8 mile east by the Rim Trail. A water-bottle filling station, restrooms, seasonal food and a park store are available at Hermits Rest.

Carry water before boarding the shuttle, particularly when walking between overlooks.

Accessibility

Grand Canyon shuttle buses are wheelchair accessible and include ramps and designated wheelchair space.

Wheelchairs larger than 30 inches wide by 48 inches long cannot be accommodated, and many oversized motorized scooters do not fit.

Conditions at individual overlooks can include slopes, uneven surfaces, snow, ice and crowds. Visitors with specific mobility concerns should confirm current conditions with the National Park Service before traveling.

The unpaved Canyon Rim Trail between Mohave Point and neighboring overlooks should not be treated as equivalent to the developed shuttle-stop area.

Pets

Pets are not permitted on park shuttle buses. Qualifying service animals are allowed under applicable accessibility rules.

Leashed pets are permitted on designated South Rim trails above the rim, but owners must follow current park rules and remove all waste.

Because private vehicles cannot normally travel Hermit Road during the shuttle season, visitors with pets may need to reach Mohave Point entirely on foot.

Visiting with Children

Mohave Point can be included in a family shuttle itinerary, but the canyon rim remains hazardous.

  • Keep children within reach near the rim.
  • Do not allow climbing or sitting on barriers.
  • Remain clear of the shuttle roadway and loading area.
  • Carry water, snacks and warm layers.
  • Use a headlamp if staying through sunset.

Weather and Safety

Mohave Point is exposed to sun, wind, rain, snow and thunderstorms.

Leave exposed rim areas when thunder or lightning is nearby. Shuttle service may be delayed, altered or suspended during severe weather.

Winter snow and ice can cover paths and viewing areas. Wear appropriate footwear and remain behind barriers.

How Long Should You Spend at Mohave Point?

Allow approximately 30 to 60 minutes for the overlook and photography.

For sunset, plan at least 90 minutes, including early arrival and time for twilight. Add shuttle travel and waiting time when building the full itinerary.

Allow approximately 30 to 45 additional minutes to walk from Hopi Point, depending on pace and trail conditions.
